REFINE Beauty Hub
Research
The research phase of REFINE Beauty Hub focused on understanding the challenges users face when booking beauty services. Using a combination of user interviews, competitor analysis, and contextual inquiries, I sought to uncover pain points and expectations for an ideal booking experience.
Interviews with five frequent beauty service users were particularly insightful. Participants shared their booking processes, frustrations, and criteria for evaluating stylists or salons. Key challenges included the need for verified reviews, visual portfolios, and reliable communication tools. For example, one user highlighted the frustration of booking a stylist via social media only to face double-booking issues, emphasizing the need for a centralized platform with real-time availability.
Remote interviews provided diverse perspectives, and quantitative data revealed critical trends: 80% of users preferred online booking, yet 65% experienced issues like overbooking or missed appointments due to poor communication. Additionally, while 75% relied on reviews to choose a provider, half expressed skepticism about their authenticity on current platforms.
Define
The process began with comprehensive research, including interviews and contextual inquiries, which revealed key pain points. Using these insights, I developed personas like Emma, a busy professional prioritizing convenience, and Sophia, a beauty enthusiast seeking trends and authentic reviews. These personas guided the creation of seamless user flows for exploring salons and booking services.
Wireframing followed, starting with low-fidelity sketches that outlined essential features like the booking process, stylist profiles, and review systems. User testing on these wireframes provided valuable feedback, informing refinements and preparing for the next phase. High-fidelity mockups integrated visual design elements, including color palettes and branding, which were transformed into an interactive prototype for usability testing.
Deliverables included user personas, journey maps, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and a style guide to ensure design consistency. The iterative process and continuous feedback enabled us to create a platform that addressed users' frustrations, offering a streamlined, trustworthy booking experience and setting a new industry standard.
Design
Developing the REFINE Beauty Hub was a dynamic and iterative design journey, where user-centered principles guided every decision. The process began with an in-depth brainstorming session to identify the core problems users faced and envision a solution that would seamlessly integrate their needs. Initial sketches were created to explore various concepts for the platform’s layout, user flows, and functionality. These low-fidelity sketches were the foundation for early discussions with stakeholders and served as a springboard for wireframe development.
The low-fidelity wireframes focused on core functionalities, such as stylist portfolios, appointment bookings, and reviews. Each wireframe was designed with simplicity and ease of navigation in mind. I conducted usability testing with target users to evaluate the flow of critical tasks, such as browsing stylist portfolios and completing the booking process. Feedback from these sessions revealed opportunities to improve clarity in navigation, such as grouping related features and incorporating visual cues to guide users.
The wireframes were iterated upon to refine the structure and interaction patterns. For instance, users expressed a need for more prominent call-to-action buttons and clearer categorization within the stylist portfolio section. These insights informed the next iteration, which included redesigned layouts and added elements like breadcrumbs for improved wayfinding.
Once the wireframes were validated, I transitioned to creating high-fidelity mockups. The design phase emphasized crafting a polished aesthetic that resonated with the platform’s target audience while maintaining a user-friendly interface.
- Color Palette and Branding: Inspired by the name "REFINE," I developed a sleek and minimalistic design language that conveyed sophistication and trust. The vibrant burnt orange-red color served as a focal point, exuding energy and reliability, while complementary orange tones added warmth and approachability. These colors were strategically applied to buttons, highlights, and other interactive elements to guide users intuitively through the platform.
- Typography and Imagery: I selected clean, modern typography to enhance readability and paired it with high-quality, relatable imagery that reflected the professionalism of the beauty industry.
The high-fidelity mockups were transformed into interactive prototypes using Figma, allowing users to engage with the platform as if it were live. These prototypes simulated key user journeys, such as discovering stylists and completing an appointment booking. Usability tests were conducted with a mix of remote and in-person participants to gather diverse perspectives.
Through these tests, I identified areas that needed fine-tuning, such as simplifying the filtering options and improving text hierarchy in the booking flow. Adjustments were made to address user feedback, ensuring the platform was intuitive and aligned with their expectations.
The final deliverables included a polished, visually cohesive platform along with a detailed style guide to maintain consistency across future iterations. The style guide documented the color palette, typography, spacing guidelines, and reusable components, making it easier for developers to implement and extend the design.
The result was a sophisticated yet user-friendly platform that not only met but exceeded user expectations, embodying the refinement and quality synonymous with the beauty industry.

Test
The testing phase was a critical component in shaping the REFINE Beauty Hub, ensuring that the platform was not only functional but also provided an intuitive and enjoyable user experience. Testing was integrated throughout the design process, from initial wireframes to high-fidelity prototypes, with each stage presenting its own challenges and opportunities for refinement.
Testing began with low-fidelity wireframes, designed to validate the core structure and user flows of the platform. These wireframes emphasized the primary user journeys, such as browsing stylist portfolios, booking appointments, and leaving reviews.
Challenges Encountered:
- Navigation Clarity: Early feedback highlighted that users struggled to understand the flow between browsing portfolios and booking appointments. The navigation menu was not intuitive, leading to confusion about where to find key features.
- Booking Complexity: Users reported that the booking process felt overwhelming due to unclear call-to-action buttons and overly dense layouts.
Resolutions:
- Redesigned the navigation menu to group related features and added breadcrumb trails for improved wayfinding.
- Simplified the booking flow by reducing the number of steps and introducing prominent, visually distinct call-to-action buttons to guide users through the process.
Once the wireframes were refined, high-fidelity mockups were developed to incorporate branding, visual elements, and interactive components. These prototypes were tested using Figma to simulate a realistic user experience.
Challenges Encountered:
- Visual Hierarchy Issues: Participants found it difficult to differentiate between primary and secondary actions in the booking process. For example, buttons for confirming bookings blended in with other interface elements.
- Review Filtering Limitations: Users expressed frustration with the review filtering options, noting that the filters were too basic to meet their needs for finding relevant stylist reviews.
Resolutions:
- Enhanced visual hierarchy by redesigning buttons with contrasting colors and increased size, making primary actions stand out more prominently. Text hierarchy was also adjusted, ensuring key information was easily scannable.
- Expanded the filtering options for reviews, adding features like sorting by rating, date, and keyword searches to provide more flexibility and granularity.
The interactive prototypes allowed participants to engage with the platform dynamically, simulating real-world scenarios such as booking appointments or searching for a stylist. Usability tests were conducted both remotely and in-person to capture diverse feedback.
Challenges Encountered:
- Feedback Integration: Balancing diverse user feedback while maintaining design consistency proved challenging. Some users requested additional features that could complicate the overall simplicity of the platform.
Resolutions:
- Prioritized feedback that aligned with the core goals of the platform and business objectives. For example, while some users suggested integrating a live chat feature, this was deferred to a future iteration to maintain focus on the booking and portfolio browsing experiences.
Through rigorous testing and iterative refinement, the platform evolved into an intuitive, user-centered solution. Key deliverables included a finalized high-fidelity prototype, polished visual designs, and a comprehensive style guide to ensure future consistency.
The testing process highlighted the importance of addressing user pain points early and maintaining a flexible, iterative approach. The resulting platform successfully balanced functionality, aesthetic appeal, and user needs, delivering a seamless and satisfying experience.
