Blossom & Petals
Research
The research phase was pivotal in shaping the Blossom & Petals platform, ensuring every decision addressed real user needs and market gaps. Users expressed frustration with limited bouquet customization and a lack of clarity, inspiring a goal to create an intuitive, personalized, and engaging experience.
In-depth interviews and competitor analysis revealed users’ desires for more control over flower selection, educational content about blooms, and a simple, step-by-step interface. Emotional connection and sustainability were also critical factors, with users seeking eco-friendly practices and a platform that resonated on a personal level.
These insights drove the development of features like real-time bouquet visualization and guided customization, prioritizing usability and emotional engagement. By addressing these needs, Blossom & Petals positioned itself as a unique, user-focused solution in the online flower market.
Define
The define phase transformed research findings into actionable insights, laying the foundation for the platform’s design. Synthesizing data from user interviews and competitive analysis, I used an affinity map to uncover patterns and recurring pain points. Key issues emerged: users found existing platforms complex, lacked real-time bouquet visualization, and were frustrated by limited customization options.
These insights shaped the project’s core problem statement: “How might we create an intuitive, visually engaging platform that allows users to easily customize and purchase bouquets online?”
To further guide the design, I developed user personas representing the platform’s target audience. For instance, Taylor, a busy Marketing Specialist, sought a quick and simple way to personalize bouquets for special occasions. Her frustration with cumbersome platforms highlighted the need for a streamlined and user-friendly interface. These personas ensured every design decision addressed real user behaviors and needs.
Next, I mapped the user journey, detailing each stage from landing on the site to completing a purchase. This included entry points, exploration, customization, and checkout. By identifying potential friction points, I aimed to create a seamless, intuitive experience that prioritized ease of use and visual engagement.
Design
The design phase for Blossom & Petals was an iterative and thoughtful process, translating research insights into a user-centered platform that prioritized accessibility, creativity, and engagement. The first step was crafting a detailed sitemap to define the platform's structure and ensure seamless navigation. Key sections, such as the bouquet builder, gallery, and educational content, were strategically organized to guide users effortlessly through their journey while promoting exploration and personalization.
To ensure the design met user needs, I began with extensive ideation and sketching, where I explored potential layouts and user flows. These initial sketches were guided by the core design goals: intuitive use, visual appeal, rich customization options, and educational value. I focused on creating a user flow that made a complex task, like designing bouquets, feel simple and rewarding. My design thinking was evident in the way I balanced these priorities, ensuring every element served both aesthetic and functional purposes.
Low-fidelity wireframes were the next step, capturing the foundational structure and flow of the platform. Feedback sessions with potential users and stakeholders played a critical role in refining these designs. For instance, testing revealed areas where users found navigation unintuitive, prompting adjustments to the layout and labels to enhance clarity. This phase emphasized flexibility and responsiveness, showcasing my ability to iterate based on user feedback.
As the designs evolved, I developed high-fidelity wireframes that incorporated branding elements, such as a floral-inspired color palette, elegant serif and sans-serif typography, and high-quality imagery that evoked a sense of beauty and sophistication. These visual elements were carefully chosen to align with the platform's theme and create an emotional connection with users. The bouquet builder, the platform's centerpiece, was a particular focus of my design thinking. I aimed to create an experience that allowed users to visualize their bouquets in real time.
Interactive prototypes brought the designs to life, enabling usability testing that validated the platform’s functionality and overall user experience. Users were tasked with specific scenarios, such as creating a bouquet or accessing educational content, providing actionable insights that further refined the designs. For example, testing highlighted a need for clearer iconography and more prominent calls-to-action in the bouquet builder, leading to targeted improvements that enhanced usability.
The final deliverables included polished wireframes, an interactive prototype, and a comprehensive style guide detailing the color palette, typography, iconography, and imagery standards. These elements ensured consistency across the platform and provided a clear foundation for development. My design thinking was evident throughout this process in the way I approached challenges, prioritized user needs, and balanced functionality with visual appeal. The result was a cohesive, visually stunning platform that exceeded user and business expectations, transforming the bouquet-building process into an intuitive and inspiring experience.

Test
The testing phase of Blossom & Petals played a crucial role in shaping the platform to ensure it delivered a seamless and enjoyable user experience. This phase began with usability testing of the low-fidelity wireframes, designed to validate the platform's structure, navigation, and flow. My primary focus was on assessing key functions, including signing up, browsing, and starting the bouquet customization process. Testing involved a diverse group of participants with varying levels of familiarity with online shopping to gather well-rounded insights.
Findings from Low-Fidelity Wireframe Testing
During the initial tests, participants were asked to complete foundational tasks, such as locating the bouquet builder, browsing the flower gallery, and proceeding to checkout. Feedback revealed some critical usability pain points:
- Navigation Confusion: Users found the navigation menu unclear, with some struggling to locate the bouquet builder. This finding prompted a redesign of the navigation bar to make it more prominent and intuitive.
- Checkout Flow Complexity: Users noted that the checkout process lacked a clear progression, leading to hesitations when completing their purchase. This feedback resulted in a more linear, step-by-step checkout design to simplify the user journey.
These insights informed several adjustments to the wireframes, including clearer labeling for navigation bar and a more streamlined checkout flow.
High-Fidelity Prototype Testing and Visual Design Feedback
After refining the wireframes, I created high-fidelity prototypes incorporating branding elements like a floral-inspired palette, elegant typography, and high-quality imagery. Usability tests on these prototypes aimed to evaluate how the visual and interactive design impacted the user experience. Participants were tasked with more detailed scenarios, such as customizing a bouquet, choosing delivery options, and completing a purchase.
Key Findings:
- Visual Appeal: The floral-inspired color palette and high-quality imagery received positive feedback. Participants found the visuals engaging and felt they enhanced the shopping experience, creating a sense of trust and creativity. However, some users suggested increasing font sizes for readability, particularly on smaller screens.
- Customization Experience: The bouquet builder interface was praised for its real-time visual feedback, which allowed users to see their bouquet come to life.
- Streamlined Checkout: Changes to the checkout flow were validated, as users reported feeling more confident about completing their purchases with the revised, step-by-step design.
Iterative Refinement and Alignment with User Needs
The feedback from both testing phases was instrumental in refining the platform's design and functionality. Adjustments based on user insights—such as enhanced navigation and improved iconography—ensured that the platform aligned closely with user needs and expectations. The iterative nature of the testing process allowed me to validate solutions at every stage, resulting in a cohesive and engaging final product.
Impact of Usability Testing
The thorough testing process ensured that Blossom & Petals met its goals of providing an intuitive, functional, and visually engaging platform. By listening to real users and addressing their pain points, I created a platform that not only empowered customers to customize their bouquets with ease but also delivered an enjoyable and satisfying shopping experience, aligning with both user needs and business objectives.
